High school juniors who live or attend school in the 18th Congressional District are eligible to apply for the Mickey Leland Kibbutzim Internship, a summer leadership learning program in Israel. An independent Board of Directors composed of community and business leaders reviews all applications through a highly selective process, including two letters of recommendation and an interview. Students are selected based on perception of future leadership and must have consent from a parent or guardian to participate.
While in Israel, students travel throughout the country to live with Israeli host families, travel through the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, live and work on kibbutzim in the Negev and Galilee, and visit numerous holy and historical sites over four weeks. These interns bring new understanding back to their schools and communities. Almost all have gone on to pursue higher education and many have had a significant impact as leaders in various industries and organizations.
The Mickey Leland Kibbutzim Internship Foundation covers all expenses for each student, including pre-departure training, travel, lodging, and food for participants.
